Since joining ISB I have received a lot of queries from other doctors and healthcare professionals about healthcare management, the opportunities for doctors after an MBA and getting into a b-school like ISB. The following is an attempt to write about all that I know on each of the above points. I’ll keep adding stuff here in bits and pieces so its not going to be really organised. Leave me a comment if you want more info and I’ll try and write about it.
Disclaimer: This info is not officially from ISB and is what I understand of the admission procedure here. If after reading this, you don’t get in, don’t blame me!!
Q. What are the opportunities available to doctors after an MBA?
A. After an MBA a doctor could get into one of the following industries:
- Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
- Pharmaceutical companies
- Biotech companies
- Healthcare consulting
- NGOs
The functional areas where you could get in are (by industry):
- Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
- Marketing and customer relations
- Sales
- Operations – This is where I’ve got a job now with Apollo Hyderabad
- Business development
- Pharmaceutical and biotech companies
- Marketing and customer relations
- Sales
- Operations
- Business development
- Licensing
- Discovery project management and evaluation
- Medico-marketing
Q. How should I prepare to get into a B-school?
A. I’ll concentrate on how to apply for ISB. These points would generally apply to most US & European B-schools. IIMs is a different ball-game and I suggest talking to a current student or alum from an IIM. Send an email to one of the IIM’s alumni association. I had a pleasant experience there and got a lot of responses.
ISB will look at the following parts of your application to decide whether you fit in or not:
- Essays
- Work Experience
- Recommendations
- GMAT
- Interview
Your application will most probably be compared with people from similar backgrounds, for e.g. techies will be compared with other techies and doctors with other doctors.
At the outset let me clarify that GMAT is not the only criteria for admission. Each of the above points will be weighted more or less equally, so concentrate on all of them!
Essays
ISB will ask you to write 4-5 essays as part of your application. The topics vary from year to year so take a look at the application and write. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes and above all be honest. An interviewer can usually find out if you are dishonest! I guess it might be OK to discuss the essay with family and friends, but its definitely not OK to get a professional to write it for you. ISB will definitely find out if its written by a pro.
Work Experience
Here you tell ISB about what you’ve done in your career till now. On the basis of this ISB assesses what skills you possess or have acquired. Tell them all that you have done, don’t be shy, but don’t write anything you have not actually done!
Recommendations
ISB requires you to send 2 recos with your application. According to me the best recos would be from your supervisors/bosses at work. It’s a pretty comprehensive document. Make sure the person who writes the reco knows you well. Don’t try and fudge the reco or fill it up for the recommender! Ask the recommender to fill it up, sign it and give it to you in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal.
GMAT
Last, but not the least, the GMAT. ISB’s average GMAT score has been rising and our batch (2007 batch) has an average of 706! If you get anything below 650, then you might wanna retake the exam, unless you have something exceptional in your profile, essay or work experience.
While I was preparing for my MBA admission, I was also taking coaching for CAT. This helped me a lot with the Maths. Then, I took a short course at Kaplan for the GMAT, did some questions and full-length tests, and went and gave the exam. Got decent marks and that was the end of it.
You should also read this excellent article – 10 secrets for getting into a top B-school
I agree with all the points in this article, except point 4. I agree with the part about not rushing your application but not with the part about round 1. I think you should apply for round 1 only, but ensure you start your preparation and application process well in time so that you do not rush the application. This will especially be true for MBBS grads since they might take more time preparing for the maths parts of the exams.
Q. Does ISB consider my MBBS internship as work experience?
A. Yes! (IIMs don’t) Not anymore.
Q. Does ISB consider my 3 years of MD/MS as work experience?
A. Gray area-ISB did not consider it till now, but that seems to be changing. Call or write to the admissions office for clarifications.

Hi Everyone! Work has been keeping me extremely busy so please pardon the 1 month delay in posting.
Dr. Nandhini: MBA in Hospital Administration will NOT help you in getting a job in a pharma company! You should do a regular MBA for that.
Dr. Sudhanshu Garg: Haha – I’ve heard some stories about that! An MBA should definitely help you change you career prospects. The hospital sector has a lot of opportunities for people with your kind of experience. Someone with 15 years of experience and an MBA should easily get upwards of 20-25 lakhs/year. I’m not sure if you can combine medical practice with a management role. But you can definitely take up a job as a medical administrator which will keep you in touch with the medical side of things too.
Vivek: I’m not too sure I understand your questions… Do you want to quit practise or not? You want to return to India or go to USA/Dubai?
Aarvy: In India you can get a degree in hospital admin from institutes like AIIMS, TISS, Apollo, FMS, Manipal, etc. There are tons of options abroad, but I don’t have much info about those.
Dr Danish: With the current economic situation getting a decent job after such an MBA might be difficult. I would say you would be looking at an initial package of 3-5 lakhs/year in any sector.
Dr Chandrasekar: I haven’t seen the essay questions for this year (they change every year). Please post the exact question and I might be able to help you.
Dr. Debdatta: I was just not satisfied with clinical practice. Yes, I’m satisfied with my shift to management and enjoy this better. I think both fields are equally challenging, though. Currently I think growth prospects are better in management. I plan to have my own setup in the future.
Dr. Ritin Khosla: Apply to hospitals, that should be your best bet right now. Try pharma companies also as a fall-back. What are you primarily interested in though – pharma, hospitals or some other sector?
Dr. Tahir: I think both are great institutions and courses. I don’t see much difference in terms of learning or placements.

December 6, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Hi Dr Rahul, Would be pleased if you could help me out. I am planning to branch completely out of medicine into MBA Finance. Could you suggest any relevant work experience I could show? Many people have suggested workin in a hospital. But I really dislike clinical medicine. Can you suggest me any other kind of job in the field of finance. Something like the research which we people do. Is there any such thing I can do? Secondly it will be about 18 months since date of completing medicine. Will I be prejudiced if i do not have any work experience in that period. I am sure at interview stage I will surprise them with my knowledge of the corporate world and stocks since I have been investing in stocks since quite long. Can I explain then that in 18 months I have been managing my own stock investment portfolio?. Thanks
December 7, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Dr. R. Chandrasekhar: I think this essay is basically looking for your leadership skills. You need to showcase how well you can lead a group. Be cautious what you write since there can be a lot of questioning on this essay during the interview.
Nandhini: Yes, that should help with placements and your work will be counted as experience.
Dr. Danish: I completed my MBA in 2007 and had nearly 3 years of work ex when I joined. I’m not posting my package on the blog.
Abhinav: Congrats & best of luck.
Dr. Shikha: The branch that is suitable for you depends on what your interests are… For preparing for MBA exams I suggest you join a coaching class like CL, IMS, etc.
Dr. Debdatta: The growth in salary depends on a lot of factors including your performance, promotions, etc. as well as the company’s financial strength and the economic situation.
Drhim: There are lots of jobs in the finance sector but I doubt that you can get them with a MBBS degree, and MBA might be overkill for a research kind of job. Mostly, B. Com. etc people do such back-end jobs. If you have not been working for 18 months, that’s definitely a problem. And no managing your own portfolio is not a substitute for a job!!!
December 7, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Hello,
Dr.Rahul,
Firstly, let me thank you for the great job,you been doing.I really appreciate it.Atleast for people who visit this site, they know how much your feedbacks matter.Like, everyone I have few things I need to clarification.I graduated in April-08,been working as Resident Medical Officer, from 1 1/2 years(1 year in House Job as part time)and 6 months after graduation.Scores in X & XII-about 85-90%,MBBS-58% and took more time to complete, finished in 9 years.Do,you think it matter,if applying in India or outside?
1.Which insititutes do you think,is good to crack GMAT,I have zeroed in on Kaplan/Princeton Review / Chopras all around Rs15,000.C-square which has some scholarship with ISB,claims, can get some serious results-Rs30,000.What do you have to look when you plan to join any coaching?
2.I was planning on doing PG(Pharmacology / SPM(Community Medicine),after GMAT,conisdering your posts in this blog, that I need exp,to get into a better B-School.Which branch is more suited for MBA considering career options post MBA,not Health Admin. MBA.
3.Or should I just finish GMAT and then keep working for 2 years not taking up PG,considering the money(+15 lakhs) for PG seat and +3 years of study and struggle.I could do MSc clinical trials, distance education, with parallel working too.
4.Does my present work exp, carry any chance along with the gaps during my MBBS,I could show I have been involved with an NGO and have been working from the days of medical school. What are the chances of getting admission?
5.What is the strategy for applying in B-schools outside India and ISB.I want to concentrate on London Business School.which IIM’s consider GMAT score?Could list some good B-schools?
Hope you dont mind my answering my queries.Have a great day.
Best Regards,
Rohin.

Rahul,
This is the most informative blog on this topic. So thanks! Anyways I have done mbbs from India and doing a PhD in cell biology in US. I want to find a health sector (biotech, pharmaceutical) job in India. I was wondering
1) If I relocate to India-are there any good opportunities?
2) If a MBA from US would help me get a better position?
December 11, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Hi Dr Rahul,
Since transition from MBBS to MBA finance is a major one. I had some doubts. Is this a recession proof career? Since you must have had many classmates in this field are they facing any fears of job losses in the wake of this recession. I have this feeling that MBA from top institutes is recession proof. Am i right in my thinking? Thanks for your time and patience.

Hi,
I graduated with MBBS in 1998. After moving to the UK, I worked here for 1 year and decided to have a break to look after my children. Now, after a long career break of almost 6 yrs(next year), I would like to return to work, but , am finding it extremely difficult to do so here in the UK. I would like to work in the healthcare sector. Is there any advice you have about alternative jobs(besides hospital doctor or GP)which I can do where my MBBS degree will be useful. Are there any courses available which will help qualify me better for these alternative jobs?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

dr.rahul, thanx for providind such a good knowledge.i m completing mbbs this year,n starting internship from feb2009.i wanna go for mba.bt i hv a problem that i hv already loan on my head, and i think i will need a lots of money to go for an ISB.can u tell wat will b fee structure and wat should i do??hope u will help on this regard…i think u r the best who can suggest me.thanx in advance….
December 14, 2008 at 1:02 PM
Dr. Shikha: Plesae search the net for “career launcher” or “mba coaching” and you should be able to find a coaching class near you.
Vinod 883: Your work in the dental clinic will be counted as work ex. The marks are decent, should not be a major problem. But your work ex is less. You’ll need nearly 2-3 more years of work ex for ISB.
Rohin: Thanks. Your part time work ex may not be counted for ISB. Interviewers may definitely ask you about the extra time you took in MBBS, so you need to work out how to counter those questions and have something great in your work ex or extra-curricular to cover for that.
1. I’ve heard of Kaplan and Princeton Review and they are good. But I don’t know about Chopras and C-square. I would definitely be suspicious of anyone who claims that they have some scholarships with ISB. I would look for some decent faculty and a track record of getting good results in exams.
2 & 3. Why do you want to give the GMAT right now if you plan to go in for MBA after a few years? I suggest you think about GMAT and MBA branches just before going in for the MBA only.
4. I don’t think the chances in ISB would be great.
5. Pick up a listing like Financial Times top b-schools and you’ll get a list of good b-schools. I don’t have any experience with applying to international schools so can’t help you there. IIMs only consider GMAT scores for their PGPX courses which require > 7 years of work ex.
Meha: Give the GMAT, write your essays and get your recos written. Details are there in my post above.
Suneet: 1. Yes there should be some opportunities available, I guess with bio-tech or research companies.
2. If you want a non-technical job then yes, an MBA will help, other wise I don’t think its of use.
Dr Jim: No job is recession proof except probably a government job! There are quite a few of my batch mates who are feeling the heat, esp in IT & finance.
Dr. Vikrant: My job involves the day-to-day running of the non-medical services of the hospital, and focussing on the customer experience. I guess most hospitals would have similar profiles, but the exact departments in operations would vary slightly.
J Singh: Can’t say much about the UK, but you can look at doing something like MBA, MPH, etc. You could even do some course in writing or medical writing and take up a job in that field. Think along such lines…
h.jain: You still have a long way to go before you can even think of applying to ISB. You’ll need atleast 2-3 years of work ex, excluding internship. So you should have some time to pay off part of the loan that you already have. For ISB you should budget for about 20 lakhs, half of which you should be able to get a loan for.
December 14, 2008 at 7:09 PM

3.what is the stress level of your job…i know no job is stress free….but is it a kind of 9-5 (or 9-8) job?…. do u get weekends off? any night shifts?…..
December 18, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Hello Sir, Thanks a ton for putting so much of efforts beside ur busy schedule. I am presently dealing with the final year of MBBS in IGMC, Nagpur. Hi Rahul
I went through your website, and I feel that you are the only one, who can help me take a decision regarding MBA.
I am a pathologist in Delhi, and I finished pathology 3 years back, after which I went to US to get training in hematology. However, since the time I have come back, I really feel very depressed that I am paid poorly. And pathologist in India are not even treated at par with the clinicians, which makes me feel worse, as I took took pathology out of choice and not compulsion.
After my MBBS, I always wanted to do hospital administration, as I thought I have a good personality for that. Plus I want to be in a position, which gives me power. I dont mind going out of India to do MBA. I dont know whether to do MBA or no, and if yes then , whether to do MBA or Hospital administration.
I feel my talent is getting wasted.
I really want to get paid well after studying so much.
I dont know whether i should go in for MBA or no. I dont want to feel frustated after doing MBA. Please help me if you can
December 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Hi Dr.Rahul
I have just entered my B.D.S. internship and I am very keen on doing MBA that too in marketing now since clinical dentistry is not my cup of tea. Is this the right time to prepare for cat and other enterance exams? If not then how should i increase my work experience without working in a dental clinic? also even if i get into a B grade B-school do i still have the scope of getting absorbed by a dental company?
Thanks in advance!:)
January 3, 2009 at 3:33 AM
Hiiii Rahul, this is Dr Suveer Srivastav I have completed my internship in dentistry last year and since then I am working with Cognizant Life Sciences as a data analyst{pharmacovigilance process}.what would you suggest me regarding M.B.A.health care how should I prepare what are the carrier opportunities after that.please guide me.
January 3, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Hello sir,
I’ve got an interview call from ISB Hyd today. My interviews are on 10th Jan. I was wondering if i could call you to get some insights on the preparation required for the interview.
you can contact me at eric.segal1[at]gmail.com
January 4, 2009 at 4:12 PM
Aashritha: Which internship are you talking about? Most b-schools don’t accept internship as work experience.
Niti: 1. My work experience is listed in . I’ve not done an MD. The year I joined ISB there were 6 doctors – 4 MBBS, 1 MD and 1 dentist.
2. I look after the day-to-day running of the hospital. Ensuring staff is around, processes are followed, attending to patient complaints and ensuring such complaints are minimised.
3. There is quite a lot of stress. Its kind of 9-8 but there are times when you are around later. Saturday is not off, Sunday’s are mostly off, but someone has to come to work every Sunday so there’s a rota. There are some night duties.
Atul: I suggest you go for work experience for atleast 2-3 years. You can take up a job as a resident doctor, join some insurance company as a medical underwriter or probably a pharma company.
Dr. Amit: TISS is supposed to be a great institute but I am not sure how many students get placed into places like UNICEF and all. It would be better to get in touch with some TISS alum.
Sahil: A healthcare organisation would definitely prefer you since your education brings synergy to the work you would be doing later. However, if you can demonstrate to a recruiter from some other sector that you are as capable as anybody else for the same job you might stand a chance.
Dr Rachit: You should look at getting a job as a head or senior manager of a hospital’s operations dept.
Tina: Unless you are sure that you want to hospital administration there is a good chance that you would be frustrated after an MBA also. Further, remember that as a an administrator also physicians are considered above you! Also, you might have power over the employees but never over the clinicians. I don’t think that getting more pay is a good enough reason for doing an MBA. You really should be sure that this is the career you want to pursue. Hope this helps.
Aman: I don’t think this is a good time for you to start preparing. You need some work experience. I’m not sure whether pharma or insurance companies take dentists but you could try there. Also see the comment from Suveer above – he’s working with Cognizant as a data analyst, you might wanna give that a shot.
Suveer: All the info you are looking for is given in the post above and in many of my comments. Just go through them.

January 25, 2009 at 10:22 AM
Dear Simran,
Whether you study in India or Australia, your scope won't change much. You will still get the same kind of jobs in both places. Yes, the experience before MBA might still be required. You'll have to check with the university in Australia for their requirements. Well I really can't give you a guide to success! Just work hard and do something that interests you. Don't run after money. That's all I can advise.
January 12, 2009 at 7:11 AM
hi doc ,
hats off for the gr8 work of guiding ppl!!!!
well m DA , working as SR in delhi for last 6 months. wt r the prospects of distance learning
hospital management from symbiosis, pune??
January 25, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Dear Suchi,
I'm not a fan of distance learning, especially for management courses. I think that the best part of a management course is the learning you get from interacting with your colleagues. Symbiosis is a good college and has a good name in the industry, so your prospects won't be bad. But the opportunities might be less than for a person who does a full-time course.
January 12, 2009 at 8:24 AM
Hello sir,
first of all thanks for bringing such huge informations that i would never have got to know b4.
i m in final mbbs, ms uni, vadodara. actually my basic interest is towards maths and physics. i find this medical field not-for-me.
moreover i just cant do this cramming and all that in mbbs and as a result, i have performed so dull in whole of the mbbs duration till now that i doubt if i can get admission to some good pg branch. should i go for safe game to try and try for pg?
so, acc to u, which is more preferable, from monetary point of view also? mba or pg-medical?
i have a score of 95,94 and 59 in X, XII and mbbs respectively.
January 25, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Smit,
You need to decide what interests you. Don't go solely by the money aspect. If medical does not interest you, look for other stuff otherwise stick to medical. Further, no harm giving the PG exams, if you get a good stream go for it.
January 14, 2009 at 9:21 AM
Hi Rahul!!!
well!!! first i must compliment you for th good work that u r doing by guiding people…
I am Dr. Asif and I am a dental surgeon. i am abou to finish my MBA (marketing, ICFAI BS, Hyderabad). I have 2 years for work experience, in which i was working as a denatl surgeon, more involde in marketing the dental lab and getting customers for it.
my age is 29 years now. Do you think my age will be a hindrance for my placemant in any company. My focus is mainly for pharma amd healthcare industry. ..
January 25, 2009 at 10:27 AM
Do you mean you are too young or too old? Anyways, age should not be a hindrance for placements.
January 15, 2009 at 3:43 PM
hey dr rahul,
kudos to u man for such a exemplary work u r doing for rookies like me..
well lemme tell u abt my profile
x – 85%
XII- 70%
MBBS- 70%
i ve just completed my internship and totally sure abt quitting this profession,
and for that i wanted to u to guide me,
can u guide me for mba and isb considering my marks, do i stand anywhere,..
please…
thanks in advance
January 25, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Your marks are decent. But you will need a lot of work experience before applying for ISB.
January 17, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Hi Rahul, At last I found you. Even I am in the same trap of confusion. I am a MBBS, MD and PhD in diagnostic radiology. but the sad part is i finished my MD and PhD Diagnostic Radiology in Moscow (Russian Federation) and not in India. Its a 5 yrs experience. But I am interested in management side rather than clinical side. I am interested in earning money and i want to upgrade myself in financial knowledge. How will be my future is a ? but i trust soon there will be need of such combination. I am at present working in a diagnostic center and want to do MBA hospital management. I am planning to take a distant education (correspondence course). Which is better a distant education or a regular course. Please guide me.

HR has a role to play in every company so there's definitely scope in hospitals and pharma. You need to add stronger points. This can be an additional point.

Hello Sir, I have a doubt regarding careers after MBA with MBBS. Suppose I have been placed in a pharmaceutical company, I work there for 1 or 2 years and then think of shifring to hospital, will I have a chance, and will the experience at my previous pharma company be helpful for a growth in career even if I join a hospital. Also after campus placements, what is the scope to change the job( if unhappy), like will there be vacancies or not, because MBBS with MBA will have limited options in terms of companies. Kindly spare time to reply.

I don't think you will be able to get a decent job at this time… go for the MBA if you convert.

WHAT IS THE COST OF STUDYING

Hello sir ,
I have completed my MBBS from Mumbai. I am planning to pursue MHA in the U.S .Which are the good institutes which provide MHA course in the US ?
Do we have to have job experience or jst a good GRE score will do ?
and
What is the scope if i take this degree and come back to India??
Please guide me. thanks.

Yes you will have a chance later too. In the current scenario (economic slowdown and all) there might not be too much scope. If the situation improves you might get more opportunities. I would suggest, however, that you try to make up your mind before you take the job.

Depends on which college you go to…

Chirag, I don't know much about US colleges. You'll have to check out their websites or meet some consultant who can help you. Scope after the degree should be good since there are a lot of hospitals coming up.
