MBA after MBBS

Since joining ISB I have received a lot of queries from other doctors and healthcare professionals about healthcare management, the opportunities for doctors after an MBA and getting into a b-school like ISB. The following is an attempt to write about all that I know on each of the above points. I’ll keep adding stuff here in bits and pieces so its not going to be really organised. Leave me a comment if you want more info and I’ll try and write about it.

Disclaimer: This info is not officially from ISB and is what I understand of the admission procedure here. If after reading this, you don’t get in, don’t blame me!!

Q. What are the opportunities available to doctors after an MBA?
A. After an MBA a doctor could get into one of the following industries:

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Biotech companies
  • Healthcare consulting
  • NGOs

The functional areas where you could get in are (by industry):

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations - This is where I’ve got a job now with Apollo Hyderabad
    • Business development
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech companies
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations
    • Business development
    • Licensing
    • Discovery project management and evaluation
    • Medico-marketing

Q. How should I prepare to get into a B-school?
A. I’ll concentrate on how to apply for ISB. These points would generally apply to most US & European B-schools. IIMs is a different ball-game and I suggest talking to a current student or alum from an IIM. Send an email to one of the IIM’s alumni association. I had a pleasant experience there and got a lot of responses.

ISB will look at the following parts of your application to decide whether you fit in or not:

  • Essays
  • Work Experience
  • Recommendations
  • GMAT
  • Interview

Your application will most probably be compared with people from similar backgrounds, for e.g. techies will be compared with other techies and doctors with other doctors.

At the outset let me clarify that GMAT is not the only criteria for admission. Each of the above points will be weighted more or less equally, so concentrate on all of them!

Essays
ISB will ask you to write 4-5 essays as part of your application. The topics vary from year to year so take a look at the application and write. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes and above all be honest. An interviewer can usually find out if you are dishonest! I guess it might be OK to discuss the essay with family and friends, but its definitely not OK to get a professional to write it for you. ISB will definitely find out if its written by a pro.

Work Experience
Here you tell ISB about what you’ve done in your career till now. On the basis of this ISB assesses what skills you possess or have acquired. Tell them all that you have done, don’t be shy, but don’t write anything you have not actually done!

Recommendations
ISB requires you to send 2 recos with your application. According to me the best recos would be from your supervisors/bosses at work. It’s a pretty comprehensive document. Make sure the person who writes the reco knows you well. Don’t try and fudge the reco or fill it up for the recommender! Ask the recommender to fill it up, sign it and give it to you in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal.

GMAT
Last, but not the least, the GMAT. ISB’s average GMAT score has been rising and our batch (2007 batch) has an average of 706! If you get anything below 650, then you might wanna retake the exam, unless you have something exceptional in your profile, essay or work experience.

While I was preparing for my MBA admission, I was also taking coaching for CAT. This helped me a lot with the Maths. Then, I took a short course at Kaplan for the GMAT, did some questions and full-length tests, and went and gave the exam. Got decent marks and that was the end of it.

You should also read this excellent article - 10 secrets for getting into a top B-school
I agree with all the points in this article, except point 4. I agree with the part about not rushing your application but not with the part about round 1. I think you should apply for round 1 only, but ensure you start your preparation and application process well in time so that you do not rush the application. This will especially be true for MBBS grads since they might take more time preparing for the maths parts of the exams.

Q. Does ISB consider my MBBS internship as work experience?
A. Yes! (IIMs don’t)

Q. Does ISB consider my 3 years of MD/MS as work experience?
A. Gray area-ISB did not consider it till now, but that seems to be changing. Call or write to the admissions office for clarifications.

    Kamal & Chandra,

My decision to do an MBA was not to leave the medical field altogether. I just did not like practice. I was certain that I will stay in the medical field (hospitals, pharma, etc.) but on the management side. In that sense my MBBS is of use after the MBA.

I would recommend that you guys take a good hard look at what you want to achieve in your careers and decide based on that. Don’t jump into an MBA if you think its just cool or the “in” thing.

Remember, to do a decent MBA you need to have some work experience (unless going to the IIMs). I would say that you need to work for atleast 2 years (preferably, but not necessarily, in a corporate environment.

Eventually you need to do what you like doing. Give it a good thought.

    Best of luck,

    Rahul

  6. Hello Dr rahul
Had such such a tough time locating you…typed doctors and mba in google and somehow reached you.:)

Me, my name is Manjot. Passed out of Govt Medical College Jabalpur in 2003 and joined Indian Navy almost immediately as ashort service commissioned officer. Having serious doubts about applying for a PC (permanent commission). Beginning to be interested in the idea of doing an MBA and becoming VERY RICH :) Plus i find that the dreary world of medicine doesn’t thrill me that much anymore.

My head is swimming with questions…but i’ll begin with this: does it make sense to take it one step at a time, i.e. to just concentrate on cracking the GMAT to begin with and deciding later which industry i want to specialise in…be it healthcare or biotech companies or human resource or whatever?

    Thanks much.
    Best regards
    Manjot

  7. I mean is it important to have my path clearly chalked out in my head BEFORE i get that 706 score or can i figure it out after i have passed the exam?

    Hey Manjot,

Your decision on what you want to do after an MBA will change even while you are doing the MBA and also during placement time. I always wanted to get a marketing job but finally preferred the operations job that I got!!

So just concentrate on the GMAT and then on the application.

    Best of luck,

    Rahul

    Dear Chaitanya,

I don’t think you will get your degree if you do not complete your internship. And if you do not have a degree I doubt if a B-school will grant you admission. Further, you should have some work experience before joining a b-school, so I think you should complete your internship, work for a bit and then join an MBA programme.

    Hi doc

Am an MBBS grad and have one and half years of work experience in emergency medicine. After the hard day of slogging and numerous amounts of being kicked around by my seniors and the meagre pay, i decided i could not take it anymore and quit.plus being a young woman doc in india is an altogether different ball game.hope you understand.
i want a more easier life and am more on the creative side.i am also very interested in pursuing an MBA as i have no other options left but to go in for what i should have opted for a few years back.
anyway my point is, i do not want to do a management course to do hospital administration.i am highly inclined to the retail or entertainment industry.I am also an extremely talented painter(also wanted to pursue art) but i guess there is no scope for that at the moment.so i want you to tell me what should i opt for? in mba….?

and where do you think they accept mbbs students for management studies…people keep asking me why i am changing and they say that is most important.i don’t know why? can u tell me why?
i just want a good career going

Hi Rahul! kudos for taking out time for replying!
I wanted to ask,r the score in academics(through the mbbs course) matter much during the selection at IIM’s or ISB, i mean i have really low acads say
MBBS-53%,Xth-90%,XII-85% do istand a chance considering that i may score high in CAT,n do good at GD n PI??

    Maya,

Sorry for the extremely delayed reply. I’ve just joined work and pretty much moved to a new city. It’s been hectic setting up a house and getting settled. Plus no internet at home yet has been a huge handicap.

Enough about me, getting back to your question - it just seems that you are jumping into and MBA because you have no other option. That’s not a good enough reason. What will you do if after one and a half years you realise that management is also not what you like? Yes, the pay will not be meagre, but you could still get kicked around by your seniors!!!

You need to give this a good hard thought, speak to people who have enough experience in management post MBA, probably join some company as a trainee/intern in marketing, etc. That is what I did when I decided to leave MBBS.

By simply jumping into and MBA you are liable to make the same mistake that you say you made when u joined MBBS.

Think about it and let me know a good reason for an MBA. Then we might discuss where to apply and how.

    Cheers,

    Rahul

    Priya,

    You’re most welcome!

The IIMs will definitely give some weightage to your academic scores, so even if you do good in the CAT and GD/PI, there could be some problems, but its not as if the IIM option is totally out. I would suggest getting more info on this from some IIM alums or coaching institutes like CL, IMS. They will give you better advice regarding IIMs.

ISB can give more weightage to other aspects of your application/profile and some strong aspect of your profile can help downplay your academic scores. I think your school grades are decent, but MBBS grades are a tiny problem. My grades weren’t much better than yours though: MBBS-59%,Xth-78%,XII-89%!!

Bottomline: Don’t give up hope. It is possible to get into a good institute even if you have poor past performance in acads.

    Cheers,

    Rahul

sir it will be helpful if you will tell me step wise procedure to enter into a buiness school n also wat type of work ex and recommendations a mbbs passout can get for entering into b-school for both GMAT and CAT

Posted on 05-Aug-07 at 11:18 am | Permalink
  19. Rahul

ussv meher: The Tier 1 schools like IIM, ISB, XLRI, etc are good for you. I would recommend ISB as you seem to have good work experience. You might also wanna consider US b-schools. So definitely give the GMAT, but as I said preparing for the CAT will really give your maths a solid boost, even for the GMAT. So prepare for both exams, give them both a shot and then choose from the best offers you get. You will need about 1 year to prepare well for either the CAT or the GMAT.

Apurv: Any experience is good for getting into a b-school, but if you want to improve your chances of landing a good job post your MBA, go in for a job in a pharma company or a hospital. Step-wise:
    1. Finish ur MBBS
    2. Get a job
    3. Prepare for CAT/GMAT alongwith ur job (preferably in the 2nd or 3rd year of your job)
    4. Do your MBA :)

    Dear Arush,

    Sorry for the late reply.

Pay packages after an MBA will start at around 5-6 lakhs if you graduate from the IIMs without any prior work experience…

However, I would suggest you gain work experience (atleast 2 years) before joining MBA.

MBA after MD/MS is always better as it increases your work experience. However, if you really don’t want to do an MD/MS then there is no point wasting time and energy on it.

Get a good job after MBBS, does not necessarily have to be a medical job and then go in for an MBA after some time.

    Hope this helps…

    Cheers,

    Dear Shantanu,

The pay package you will get will depend on a lot of factors like:
    1. Years of experience before ISB
    2. Relevance of experience to the new job
    3. How you do in the interview
    4. The industry you choose

In my batch the pay packages varied from around 9 lakhs to 20 lakhs for docs.

Hi Rahul, Kudos for the great work of guiding pepole like me.

I am MBBS gaduate. Passed out in Dec 2004. Completed internship in march 2006 (due to exts n all.. u know), initialy I was associated with a pharmaceutical company as a part time health advisor for 6 months. I gave CAT last year but couldn’t score well. After that I joined Topsline Life Response Service & for last 10 months I am working with it. Topsline is first and the fastest rescue service in the country, its model based on 911 of USA.
My job profile includes managing all medical operation in city of Mumbai. I am responsible for the managing, maintaining, purchasing all medical items & equipements, in our emergency vehicles. Also I look after recruitement and training of medical staff. Curently I m managing work force of 60 doctors and paramedics.

I am willing to make my career in management sector. This year also I am taking CAT, also have registered to apply to ISB. I have not taken GMAT yet. I think I am very late to apply to ISB

My preparation for CAT is not good enough yet, also I have not started the preparation for GMAT yet. Therefore chances of me getting in good MBA program are quetionable.

How much time does it take to prepare for gmat for average student like me? If I dont get in the good program, should i contineu to work at same place? because I m thinking of shifting to pharma. How is my current job profile appear to you? Will it help me to secure admission in good college? Is it worth waiting 1 more year as my age is now 25 yrs…

Also.. do you get any advantage of being doctor in admission or at least to get a interview call?

I know I am asking you too many questions, but it will be of great help if you could answer it.

    Thanking You.

    Hi Rahul

I am an MBBS doctor with 5 years of pharmaceutical indutstry experience in medico-marketing, good professional stints as a fashion model and also an actor .

I also have worked for various direct marketing companies and some months as resident doctor.

Now after doing all this, I feel its the time to take that major decision….

Decision to shift gears..and tracks too,if possible.

I have always had this creative streak in me, restless soul trying to create something new ,out of ordinary all the time, thus I could never see myself as practicing doctor and also not as an acamedician.

Pharamceuticals gave me an insight into marketing and nances of corporate world and lot of maturity too but I do not see myself doing medico marketing forever as It does not seem to fulfill my criteria of creative and intellectual satisfaction.

I believe, I have to change careers now, into something more creative, more satisfying then just selling drugs to white coated gentleman in dim-lit clinicas.

Thats when I decided about joining ISB and I am in process of giving my GMAT now.

But, I have many queries boiling in my mind all this time……Voila….there you appear … Need your help with some questions.

I have seen that moment people know you are a doctor , they associate you with healthcare, nothing else, kind of prejudice…..but post MBA , do you think there can be avenues for me to change careers from healthcare to advertising/consulting /others etc.

How you think is the perception of people about MBA docs from ISB, does it depend a lot on their background.

will I be treated at par with other students during placements for other sectors than healthcare.

With my exp. and good score, how probable it is to get in ISB.

I already have a package of around 10 l / annum, do you think it would make much of a difference in my salary post ISB ?

Many more, but wont hassle you more than this for now.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Cheers :)

    Hey Guys,

Sorry for the late replies… been extremely busy with work and all. I’m writing this one post to answer all your queries, if I miss out please ask again!

Amol, I agree that it is late for you to apply for this year’s ISB admission. Also, I think that your work experience is too less for a place like ISB. You need atleast 2 years… the pharma/healthcare students in the current batch have an average of 5-6 years experience, so that’s the kind of competition that you would be up against next year…

Amol & Sekhar, you’ll need atleast 6 months to do any decent prep for GMAT/CAT. And being a doc does not automatically get you an interview call…

Manoj, you’ve got diversity and experience. Both are good for you to probably get an interview call, provided you get a decent score on the GMAT. Come placement time, it all depends on the way you present yourself to the recruiter… I don’t think there’ll be any prejudice provided u can prove that you will be better than the next candidate. ISB should make a difference to your salary levels too.

Again, if I missed out anything or u need more clarifications just leave a post.

    Cheers,

    Rahul

    hi Rahul,

I was just curious about your GMAT score. My elder bro has taken GMAT and has applied to ISB this year. His score is 680 and he has 4 years of Work-experience in Apollo Gleneagles (as a junior doctor in Intensive Care Unit), apart from 6 months of internship and 8 months of House-staffship in Calcutta Medical College. Can you kindly throw some light on his chances for an interview call and subsequently for admission into ISB? What is the average GMAT score for doctors. I read in your blog that doctors will be judged against people from the same industry only.

    Dear Prosenjit,

Yes, doctors will be judged against people from the same industry. With his profile he seems to stand a good chance of an interview call, provided there are not 50 other doctors with better profiles!! Also, remember that GMAT is not the only thing that guarantees an interview call. (My score was 700.)

But frankly I think he’ll get an interview call, don’t worry about that. Worry about how he will handle the interview and especially how he will convince the panel about the reasons for his switch.

    Best of luck,

    Rahul

Thanks for replying so quickly! Didn’t expect it really. Just wanted to ask you one more question, that i missed out the first time. His acads are as follows: MBBS - 65%, Xth - 86%, XIIth - 82%. Does he have to guard against a question about his steadily decreasing acads?

    :)

I don’t think those marks are as bad as mine!!

But seriously, they can ask anything in the interview… usually academics don’t come up much but you might wanna keep some answers ready for this. Don’t go by the absolute marks, think relative.. if 65% marks in MBBS were good enough to get u say a rank of 25/100 then that’s not so bad.

Dr. Gaffar: Your profile can be what you want it to be… Doctors from my batch at ISB are doing marketing, setting up new projects or working in the social sector (which pays amazingly well too!). So take up the specialisation u like.

Amit: Pretty much the same stuff as above applies to you. Just choose what u like most, keeping in mind the career goal that you have set for yourself.

Dr. Tukaram: Take a look at the job profiles that I have listed in the post above.

Meenakshi: I’m sorry I don’t know of any b-schools that provide pharma and hospital management. That does not mean that there aren’t any! You’ll just have to search for them :)

Ankita: You’ll need to apply to a few companies that will find your education and work ex interesting. Try looking for pharma cos, hospitals (in management roles), insurance companies, clinical trial organisations, etc. They might offer you internships which pay peanuts but I suggest you take them since that will be extremely valuable experience. My corporate work ex before MBA was only internships…

Akshay: Both degrees are good. You need to decide where you wanna be in the future? Running a hospital or managing a healthcare business - there’s a big difference between the two. Personally I feel that an MBA gives you a broader perspective on business. You might initially need to struggle to understand the nitty-gritty of running a hospital but it should serve you better in the long-run. However, I suggest you sit with an MHA and figure out what they do and what the future prospects are before deciding on an MBA or MHA. Also, once you do an MHA you are pretty much stuck with hospitals as a career. See my reply to Meenaxi below for the salary question.

Vaibhav: If you don’t want to continue in the health sector it will be better to switch now. Might be a huge struggle but should work out better in the long run. But yes, both hospital jobs and research experience will be counted as work experience.

Meenaxi: I don’t know what a MBA in hospital management gets, but an MBA working in a hospital can earn anywhere from 3-4 lakhs to 20+ lakhs. It all depends on your skills, previous work experience, your school and the company/hospital you join.

Shashank: You won’t face any problems if you give the entrance exams, that only depends on your preparation. But as I have repeated in this post and my comments, it is always better to have atleast a couple years of work experience before doing an MBA.

Vinay: Please read the post - I have given lots of opportunities and the future of the field there already.

Vivek: Sorry missed out replying to you in the last post. I have not heard of any MBA in clinical research yet. However, there are courses in clinical research that you may want to pursue. I have given a list of the career prospects in the post… if you need any info about a specific prospect let me know.

Hi Rahul really a great blog I am very lucky to find your blog very informative and Rahul hatsoff to your dedicated replies and by the way have a few FAqs of my own, help very much needed.
I completed medicine in Dec 2006 had prepared for my pg exams this year but not very effficiently and wanted to opt for RadioDiagnosis which is indeed out of my reach as the cost too high(1Cr) then came around the idea of MBA second time already had the idea just after completing mbbs.(should have gone with my first instinct)

I always had the managerial instinct and presently am managing our 30 year old nursing home along with my parents who are also doctors.

Planning to do mba from a prestigious institute

how long will it take if i start right from today and what is the institute i should be aiming for

Posted on 19-Dec-07 at 5:21 pm | Permalink
  53. Rahul

    Sagar,

How long it will take depends on you. You will need to prepare for CAT or GMAT, prepare your application and for the interview. Depending on how confident you feel it can be anywhere from 1 month to 1 year :)

The choice of institutes is upto you but if you want to come to ISB you will need a minimum of 2 years of experience.

Left the Course in between &joined a govt job.
(Didn,t get any experience certificate from the DNB insti)

Now ,its been a year in the govt job.

With this type of profile I would like to ask you wether it will be feasable for me to go for MBA at ISB(I can not afford to be jobles for more than a year),as I do not have the experience cert for the 1yr residency for DNB which I left in between & also my current employer won’t issue a NOC ..even resignation (getting a govt job is difficult, but resignation procedures are even tough &agonisingly slow)

Prasanth: The only thing you can do about maths is prepare, prepare, prepare. Pick up some GMAT maths books and practice all the questions. If you are also preparing for CAT then there should be no problem in doing the GMAT maths.

Aruna: Next time please post only one comment!! If you read through the post above you’ll find some tips on preparing for MBA and also look at my suggestion that you should have some experience before doing an MBA.

    Kushal: Thanks!!

Akash: The 1 year thing will be a problem… you should have some proof that you worked there. Not getting an NOC should not be a problem, I think. However, it will be best that you approach ISB with your problems and the Admissions department should be able to help you with the whole thing. I’m not too sure about the IMS correspondence course. However, I personally think you need a lot of motivation to do such courses. Taking classes usually keeps you regular.

    Happy New Year everybody!

  80. Everybody, sorry for the delay in replying… been a very hectic month at work and on the personal front…

Manish: There are dozens of exams you can give… I suggest you join some decent coaching institute like CL/IMS, etc. and they will give you the download on all the possible options. Apart from the Indian exams, you can also give GMAT for international b-schools and ISB.

Your first step needs to be getting into a good b-school, worry about getting a job later.

Mayank: The above applies to you too. GMAT/CAT is an important first step to get in to a b-school in India or abroad. Then depending on different school’s procedures there will be more steps. Sessions vary for different schools. For ISB the next session will be March 2009 for which application deadlines will be in October and December this year.

Sonal: First, I think you need to make up your mind whether you wanna do an MBA or PG. I don’t think there is any use of joining PG only for the work-experience. Extra-curricular activities are very important for b-schools. You should continue with these. Getting the necessary job experience should not be a problem at all. There are tons of insurance companies looking for MBBS grads to work as underwriters. You should post your resume on some online job site and look for suitable jobs. You can also try applying to pharma companies directly. If nothing else, working as a resident in a hospital is always an option for you and good work experience also.

    Dr. Balkrishna:
    1. I’m not sure whether there are any specialised pharma MBAs, never heard of them neither did I look for them when I started my MBA plan. Even if you want to work in a pharma company only getting a broader perspective on management is always a better idea. You can then build on those principles as you work.

    2. Pharma is a part of healthcare and I don’t see how it is not a logical extension to your MBBS degree. You understand the basic need for drugs and their power in curing diseases. At the end of the day you need to interact closely with doctors to develop, produce and market the drugs. So being a doctor yourself you are in a good position to understand those needs. You can build on this argument but please do research other points as well.

    3. Please be honest in your interview.

    4. You can go and market drugs to doctors, you can help the company decide what is the market potential for the drug pipeline and what will the best marketing plan for the same, etc.

    5. You can specialise in operations, but remember that most operations courses in b-schools are manufacturing oriented, not service oriented.

Shobhit: Please read the post above… that is a decent guide to MBA after MBBS. If you have any specific query I will be glad to answer. I’m not sure about the maths part. You will need to check with the specific b-schools that you apply to. CAT/GMAT maths is only till 10th level and I don’t think you would have a problem with it.. but not sure about the academic requirements of the b-schools.

Vishal: I don’t think anyone is going to ask for a b-plan at this stage. You are planning to do an MBA so that you can make a good b-plan from your idea!! They might definitely ask you why you would be suitable to run such a plan - that is something you should have an answer for.

Dr. Raman: If you are really interested in hospital management then you need to look in to doing Masters in Hospital Management or Masters in Hospital Administration. I’m not sure how to prepare for those courses as I never looked in to the same. Please visit some university websites that offer this course and you should be able to find the requirements.

Devesh: Your CV only speaks about your PERSONAL achievements. While this is good, any good b-school or even company will want to know what you achieved in your work experience and how good a team player are you. Please cut down on your awards, achievements and stuff and write about your work experience too.

Dr. Nitin: Part-time or correspondence MBA can be decent too. I would personally suggest part time rather than correspondence since the biggest benefit of an MBA is interacting and learning from your peers.

My internship will be gettinh over in November 08. its just that ive jot a job alongside. right now i’m in Marlabs, bangalore with a package of 4.5 lacs pa. . By the end of my internship i’l be having some 1 year of work experience in my company as well. Plz dont be surprized at how i’m able to manage both the things simultaneously, but by god’s grace it going on smoothly.
As you mentioned previously that ISB’s new batch will be starting in March 09 and the application deadline will be october-december08. i just want to know if it will be in my favour to apply for the 09 batch with my already displayed personal achiements + combined 1 year of internship + job experience or shoule i work for another 1-2 years after finishing my internship in november 08 and then go ahead with the application process.
Please do reply back. my mind is in a big chaos and unless i get some expert advice on it I doubt my head will blast thinking over it. thanks

Dr. Nitin: You can definitely create an application that can stand a chance at ISB.

    Dr. Balkrishna: Best of luck!

Devesh: I think you should work for a few years before applying. Looking at the profile of the doctors who came this year, even for doctors it is becoming pretty competitive. So some more work experience will greatly improve your chances.

    hi….
am a II year mbbs student n am doin my mbbs from a college in nepal which isnt recognized by mci……i didnt drop after my 12th as my parents advocated me to take admn. directly as i had failed in securing a seat for myself in the very first attempt of mine at the PMTs..As such my marks were never bad{Xth-91% n XIIth-85%} ……….i had been inclined at doing an MBA degree from begining but my father wanted me to have a fall back plan in form of an MBBS degree……….anyways he had agreed at allowing me to pursue my dreams of doin an MBA after am thru with my MBBS……………………………….
my question to u is that whether my having done my MBBS from nepal will affect my chances of making into a b-school……………….
as such i ll be recognized by the mci after i clear the screening test of mci…………hence my degree will be eligible for practice but will the board of the b-schools take it as eligible……………………….
