MBA after MBBS

Since joining ISB I have received a lot of queries from other doctors and healthcare professionals about healthcare management, the opportunities for doctors after an MBA and getting into a b-school like ISB. The following is an attempt to write about all that I know on each of the above points. I’ll keep adding stuff here in bits and pieces so its not going to be really organised. Leave me a comment if you want more info and I’ll try and write about it.

Disclaimer: This info is not officially from ISB and is what I understand of the admission procedure here. If after reading this, you don’t get in, don’t blame me!!

Q. What are the opportunities available to doctors after an MBA?
A. After an MBA a doctor could get into one of the following industries:

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Biotech companies
  • Healthcare consulting
  • NGOs

The functional areas where you could get in are (by industry):

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations – This is where I’ve got a job now with Apollo Hyderabad
    • Business development
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech companies
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations
    • Business development
    • Licensing
    • Discovery project management and evaluation
    • Medico-marketing

Q. How should I prepare to get into a B-school?
A. I’ll concentrate on how to apply for ISB. These points would generally apply to most US & European B-schools. IIMs is a different ball-game and I suggest talking to a current student or alum from an IIM. Send an email to one of the IIM’s alumni association. I had a pleasant experience there and got a lot of responses.

ISB will look at the following parts of your application to decide whether you fit in or not:

  • Essays
  • Work Experience
  • Recommendations
  • GMAT
  • Interview

Your application will most probably be compared with people from similar backgrounds, for e.g. techies will be compared with other techies and doctors with other doctors.

At the outset let me clarify that GMAT is not the only criteria for admission. Each of the above points will be weighted more or less equally, so concentrate on all of them!

Essays
ISB will ask you to write 4-5 essays as part of your application. The topics vary from year to year so take a look at the application and write. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes and above all be honest. An interviewer can usually find out if you are dishonest! I guess it might be OK to discuss the essay with family and friends, but its definitely not OK to get a professional to write it for you. ISB will definitely find out if its written by a pro.

Work Experience
Here you tell ISB about what you’ve done in your career till now. On the basis of this ISB assesses what skills you possess or have acquired. Tell them all that you have done, don’t be shy, but don’t write anything you have not actually done!

Recommendations
ISB requires you to send 2 recos with your application. According to me the best recos would be from your supervisors/bosses at work. It’s a pretty comprehensive document. Make sure the person who writes the reco knows you well. Don’t try and fudge the reco or fill it up for the recommender! Ask the recommender to fill it up, sign it and give it to you in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal.

GMAT
Last, but not the least, the GMAT. ISB’s average GMAT score has been rising and our batch (2007 batch) has an average of 706! If you get anything below 650, then you might wanna retake the exam, unless you have something exceptional in your profile, essay or work experience.

While I was preparing for my MBA admission, I was also taking coaching for CAT. This helped me a lot with the Maths. Then, I took a short course at Kaplan for the GMAT, did some questions and full-length tests, and went and gave the exam. Got decent marks and that was the end of it.

You should also read this excellent article – 10 secrets for getting into a top B-school
I agree with all the points in this article, except point 4. I agree with the part about not rushing your application but not with the part about round 1. I think you should apply for round 1 only, but ensure you start your preparation and application process well in time so that you do not rush the application. This will especially be true for MBBS grads since they might take more time preparing for the maths parts of the exams.

Q. Does ISB consider my MBBS internship as work experience?
A. Yes! (IIMs don’t) Not anymore.

Q. Does ISB consider my 3 years of MD/MS as work experience?
A. Gray area-ISB did not consider it till now, but that seems to be changing. Call or write to the admissions office for clarifications.

    Dear Dr rahul
    1. What does the job profile of General manager Medical service comprises of in corporate hospital?
    2. What role can a doctor play with MBA finance in hospital and in Pharma?

    3. My senior is into Equity Research with Credit Suisse ( investment banking) and as off shore associate earns about Rs 18-20 lakh fixed component. His analyst it seems is a John Hopkins MD doctor with his deputy being a PHD from MIT? That guy is supposed to be uno in bitech for 5 years in succession in Wall Streets!

Can doctors hope to get such package in corporate hospitals? ( i have over 11 years work experience including army experience. I will be completing an executive MBA ( general management) course from IIM-K so need some feed back from u as well ….u may email me at plabmate@sify.com)

    4. Also what role does doctor actually play in Hospital Operations- the role u are playing ( i have read what u have posted cna u elaborate a bit further than that?

    5. Dr Gujral I believe is VP projects with apollo Chennai. What do doctors do exactly in such role ?

6 Last but not the least A BIG thanks for Saving our soal in this wild wicked world of selfish medicine by showing us an alternative way of helping others!!!!
I Salute u and ur effort!

Abhishek: ISB does not offer an MBA in hospital management. An MBA in hospital management will have some good options ahead since there is a lot happening in the healthcare field. There’s a lot of expansion going on and trained people will be required to handle all this. An MBA from ISB should get a minimum of Rs. 10 lakhs/year with an average of Rs. 15 lakhs/year. Internship is a requirement to get your MBBS degree. After the internship you also need at least 2 years of work experience to get into ISB.

Vashishta: I’m not a big fan of distance learning for MBA. I feel that studying in a regular course and interacting with your peers gives you a better education as far as MBA is concerned. An MD(pharma)+MBA should have a huge scope in the pharma industry.

PG is counted as work experience but internship is not. However, you should confirm with the admissions dept at ISB before applying.

Ramya: To get into a 2 year MBA (IIM, XLRI, Symbiosis, FMS, etc.) you will need to give an entrance test like CAT/XAT, etc. For ISB you will need 2 years work experience and a good score in the GMAT. The options open to you are given above in my post.

Sukhjinder: Again the options open to you are given above in my post. Pls go through those.

Bidyut: As far as practicing medicine is considered it is a complete shift. You can still work in a hospital or pharma company and be in the healthcare sector, but you might not get to practice medicine.

Pallavi: 1. I’ve not come across a General Manager – Medical Services yet. However, I assume it would be a role like a Medical Superintendent.
    2. An MBA Finance can look after the accounting and finance departments of large hospitals/hospital chains and pharma companies.
    3. Yes doctors with MBA can get such packages in corporate hospitals.
    4. I look after all the non-medical services at the hospital. The departments that come under us include Front Office, Billing, Maintenance, F&B, Housekeeping, IT, etc. Essentially we are the first point of contact for the patient and co-ordinate most of the requirements of the patient while they are in the hospital.
    5. Gujral is no longer with Apollo. However, his role was to find out new opportunities for Apollo and help set up new facilities.
    6. I’m glad my blog is useful. Thanks!

Sara: I’m not sure what ICFAI’s requirements are for entrance. You can visit their website or go meet them and they should be able to tell you how you can get admission there.

Kishore: If you want to get into non-healthcare companies please go in for an MBA not an MHA. However, let me tell you its going to be difficult to move out of healthcare related work even if you work for other companies. Please post your questions here itself and I will answer…

Bindhu: Yes, working as an assitant is counted as work experience. ISB assumes a certain degree of honesty from the applicants. Plus, you will need to get recommendations written from your employers, and ISB can make out whether they are fake or real. The interview will be another place where you might get caught if you do not have real work experience.

Ritesh: I think you just need to do well in ur MBA and then apply to whichever companies you can…

  11. hey rahul jee,
    so fast reply
my GOD, thanks for ur concern….i wonder wat a level of patince u have……
    thanks for reply
    bye

  12. i saw a lot of questions where people are interested in knowing about switching to non-healthcare fields post-mba..thats what prompted me to post here… heres my 2 cents.. i did an mba from a top 15 institute…mbbs from a govt college prior to that.. hardly any work-ex before mba… i majored in finance.. my mbbs helped me get my first job in which i was doing equity research in the pharmaceutical sector…i must say that i wouldnt have gotten a finance job from campus if this company was not looking for a pharma analyst.. but my interest in finance kinda outgrew my interest in the pharmaceutical sector.. and right now im in a new job as an investment analyst tracking other sectors along with pharma.. pursuing cfa too now.. my point is switching to a non-healthcare field is possible but tougher than getting a healthcare related job..and u need some luck too…but if u can prove to the recruiter that u are as good or even better than the engineers or CAs or B.Coms or whoever in ur batch, theres nothing stopping u..all the best guys..

  13. its not all about money friends….look if u save some patient how much satisfaction u wil have in life…..
be focused in life……and try to achieve it wat ever hurdles that may come in life…………but friends dont leave medicine field looking at those stupid mba…..
never compare mbbs with mba……..they r no where equal with us.
    we r professionals…. coming to money part……
if u have a money constraint, so many ppl doesnt know few tips how to earn money, some of them r
1..join a pharma company as clinical research officer r assistant….even with low salary in the begining. but after one yr exp ur salary is 25 to 30 thousands, which is decent enough to live and prepare for pg.
2…join any pharma industry as medical adcisor and prepare for pg.even there tha salaries r very good..no need even pg
3..r join any medical college r rural hospital in andhra pradesh…..they give minimum 20 thousand…..which is decent enough
so u can earn and study at the same time. so work and study till u get pg
at the time of exams u can put study leave for 2 months.
doctors r like gods n kings, they r no where equivalnet to mbas.
    i did mbbs, mba……….
dont think life is so cool in mba. so many head aches to handle
at the end of the day….no job satisfaction
u r no more a doctor in the company
so think frnds all abt this…..before leving medicine
if its all about money………then buy pg seat in non clinical branches any where in india by taking loan
the seat costs just 5 to 15 lakhs max
u can repay after the course ,,,because u can be drawing decent 40 r 50 k after completion.so u can repay.
another thing is u can find jobs in some companies as medical officer where the pay is good
so u can work till u get pg…
still u dont get pg even after that,, then u can do mba any time ,beco thers no age limit
try to stick as much as possible.
    bye frnds

  14. hey Doc ,
Thanks a ton for helping helpin out so many doctors n guiding them on how they should go abt fulfilling their dreamz. i would be gratefull to u if u answer to my following queries….
1 If i am a part of the corporate world, would doing an MBA program through distance learning help me obtain a managerial position (I am a part of the operations team of an contract research organisation , working here since 5 months having completed my BDS in april 2008) or would u suggest me to appear for GMAT and enroll in a full time MBA program.
2 How difficult is it for a person with medical background to make a mark in the finance or marketing sector wit no prior experience of having worked in these sectors? ( I always feel tht for a finance related job why would the recruiter look for some one with MBBS/BDS + MBA instead of some one who done his or her graduation on commerce? )
3 Wat are the opputunities tht MBBS/BDS + MBA would have in the healthcare industry ( are there enough jobs in the healthcare sector to accomadate medicos with an MBA? )
    thanx….

  17. Hello Dr. Rahul,

Thanks for your precious time and advice, indeed this is a wonderful site.

My name is Narmada, I am Dentist with MBA(Full time Course) in Marketing and Finance, I want to work as a Business analyst in Healthcare sector and I applied to almost all the job openings in Naukri and Monster, but not heard anything, and could not come across any placement who recruits for Healthcare sector. It is like a deadend for me. Would you be able to advice me as how to proceed.

    Thanks and take care

exdoc: Thanks for your advice to the readers of this blog!

tomcruise: Thanks for your inputs again. I’m sure it’ll help many docs who are in a dilemma whether to stay in the medical side or not.

    Shadab: 1. I would suggest a full-time programme.
    2. Check out exdoc’s post above. I agree with his advice. Doctor’s usually don’t have great financial skills, and most finance companies will first look for finance skills and then sector experience.
    3. There are loads of opportunities now. Check out the list I have given in my post above.

Soumyaneel: What exactly do you mean by the sports sector?

Atul: Setting up a big hospital is not just about being a manager. Even if you do your MBA you would need 15-20 years of experience before you will be able to set up your own hospital. If you establish yourself as a good doctor after MD/MS, in 15-20 years you can again set up your own hospital!

Narmada: A business analyst only for the healthcare sector is a difficult position to find. You need to find an analyst role that includes healthcare amongst other sectors. Try to apply directly to investment banks, PE funds and consulting firms rather than going through job sites or placement agencies. I have found that job site, etc. are not too great for niche roles.

  19. Hello Dr. Rahul,

    This is Mohit.
I would be grateful if you could give advise on my dilemma.

Let me give you my background.

    MBBS 2001.
PLAB, NHS Experience of 1 year, other 5 years out of which 3 years in my own family hospital.
I do have an advanced computer diploma. (Actually, I have acquired knowledge of computer science as a hobby.)
I am presently pursuing executive (1 year) mba at IMT, Ghaziabad.
Till now, I thought only about healthcare IT. So, I planned to take Marketing/IT as my major/minor combination. I did not even consider any other areas till now.
However, after seeing Lehman brothers bankruptcy in the newspaper (and obama to become president), i am really worried. (I know i am being immature)
    My questions are:
    1. Is marketing/IT a good combination for a doctor who wants to pursue healthcare IT?
    2. How do u search for jobs for a doctor MBA, other than reference hiring?
    3. Are there any specific skills i need to acquire during my mba to be ready for the healthcare IT sector?

I am thankful for taking out time from your busy schedule to guide us in our endeavors.

    Regards,
    Mohit

  20. Sorry for the addendum,

I was shortlisted for ISB for 2008. Unfortunately, i was not very convincing (even to myself) during the interview. It was my first interview in mba games and was not prepared for some very simple questions.
For those applying for ISB, I remember one question which was very simple but at the same time, very difficult to answer in a diplomatic way.—- what are the typical problems in your hospital??
I am sure that docs who have worked in smaller private hospitals will be able to understand the difficulty in answering this question.

Subsequently, I got shortlisted for Great Lakes, TAPMI, IMI, Queens, IMT. I got calls from all of them. Subsequently, I joined IMT Ghaziabad.

    Regards,
    Mohit

  21. Hi Rahul,

Guys & gals: Sorry for the late replies. Its becoming quite hectic at work these days.

Mohit: 1. Yes Marketing/IT is a good choice.

    2. Reference hiring is the best. You can also send your CVs to the companies directly and hope for a call. You might also want to look for some consultants who can help you find a job.

    3. Not really… the course should take care of it.

    4. I don't see why you can't answer the question! Hospitals/nursing homes have common problems and you are going in for an MBA to solve such problems.

Sunil: It is very difficult to rank these. If I remember correctly IIM PGPX is for people who have >7 yrs experience, so that might not be right for you. Further, if you need to work in India only I would suggest ISB. Otherwise NUS should be as good.

Maj. Popli: You should have a decent chance in a hospital chain in an administrative position. Where exactly have you done your MBA from?

Darshan: Do well in your course and you should get a decent job. However, I always suggest that one do a contact course rather than correspondance or online. Medvarsity is OK.

Hasan: MBA should give you a wider scope and more opportunities than public health or disaster management.

Rohan: The good colleges like TISS and AIIMS require you to have some work experience. Others, however, take students with no work experience.

Mital: You need to give some more specific questions. The basic stuff is outlined above in my post.

    Gaurav: You're welcome!

Varun: Yes, physiotherapy should be counted as the same as other degrees. BPT+MBA can help you get a managerial job.

Prerana: I've never heard of LATROBE personally so won't be able to comment on that.

Dipak: I'm not sure what you mean by "go for this site". Can you please clarify your question?

Shyam: Some of the colleges for this course are TISS, AIIMS, FMS and Apollo. Each of them will have their own procedure for entry which you can find out from their websites.

Sampada: I suggest you join some course like Career Launcher, TIME, IMS, etc. They will be able to give you all the guidance needed for doing an MBA.

  34. Hi,

Got various certificates regarding social service, other team events
    4 conference presentations
Organiser of monthly Twin cities Radiology Meet ( 2008 July onwards).

For the last 2 years, I have helped out my organisation in management related issues concerning Radiology and few other Depts, fairly successfully. Gained a lot of trust …. now my boss has offered to sponsor me for an ISB MBA.
I have a lot of interest in hospital management, business strategies in healthcare and above all in pioneering a “Tele Radiology” network in Hyderabad for a start.

Planning to apply for 2nd cycle. GMAT prep just started. But, Im fairly confident of 650 plus score. ( Scored 690 on practice test).
What are my chances ? Can I hope for my profile to compensate for a suboptimal Gmat score ? Should I be choosing a specialisation in MBA staright away ?

Pardon me for the length of the post.

  38. And BTW, which Apollo are u working for ? Can I get in touch with u ?
    Thanks

hi Dr…: Any of these 3 should be OK.

Maj. Popli: Finding a handsome job and package is a question of going out there and searching for it… no other way!

Soumyaneel: I have no clue about that sector!

Dr. Chandrasekar: I think ur a little too late for this year. There is no compensation for a sub-optimal GMAT score, so please concentrate on that. If you join ISB you only get to choose your specialisation after 6 months. I work with Apollo Jubilee Hills and I guess we are already in touch here 🙂

  40. Hi Maj V Popli, I am Maj Sobti from AMC and just joined PGDMLE from NLSUI. Can I have your contact no. or email id. Mine is aloksobti@gmail.com.

Good to see such a great advisory site on the doctor – MBA combination. Also nice to known you are from UCMS. I am from the first batch (1985) at UCMS-GTB Hospital and believe it or not were transferred to Dilshad Garden without any electricity / water in our anatomy dissection rooms !!
Anyway I am a Senior Consultant Urologist in the UK doing a part time MBA from Bradford University (near Leeds). Half way through it. Having second doubts sa to whether it will help / change my career prospects.
Planning to relocate to India. What prospects do I have ? Would like to combine a management role – maybe operations with continued clinical work. What is the kind of salary structure ? Would my MBA give me any additional financial renumeration.
    Cheers.
    Sudhanshu

  43. I am currently working in the UK as a junior surgical trainee. I have completed my MBBS here and then have 2 yrs experisnec after grad and am in my 1st yr of core surgical training as they call it over here and will finish this in august 2010. i shud get my MRCS by end of my training with completion of basic surgical training. i was wondering what options I have after that in terms of whether u think that an MBA is the way ahead if i want to get out of practising medicine. also, i would like to return back to india in the next 5 to 10 yrs but would like to work in the USA or specifically dubai in the medical field, but not as a practising doctor. do you think doing an MBA is the right thing and wht sectors do you feel i would be able to get jobs in or doin a degree like international health management or similar from imperial college tanaka business school london is a good alternative?

  48. Rahul i have been a regular visitor of ur blog for last 6 months.after reading all the blogs i came to the conclusion doing MBA is quite an interesting thing.I wanted to ask one simple thing ….exactly wht thing motivated to do MBA after MBBS…..Now that u have changed your career….are u satisfied about the decision that you took of doing MBA ……Wht is the differnce between the nature of work of working as a doctor and as an MBA……which work are u finding more challenging and creative….and which field do u think has more growth prospect….i wanted to ask you one more question…….ie ….Did u do MBA for getting a good job only or did u do MBA to get the business knowledge which would help you to build up a setup of urs in the future .waiting for your answer……

  50. Hi Dr. Rahul.
    Nice to meet you.
I have 7.5 yrs experience post MBBS.
now I am in a dilemma.
I want to know- which is better?
    IIM (Ahmedabad) PGPX or ISB.
I want to go in one of these post MBA-
    1. health care consulting- Mc Kinsey.
    2. Private equity related to healh sector.
    2. Bio-med device company.
    3. Pharma.
I will like to work in India only.
    thanks.

P.S.- to me it seems brand name of IIMA is better. small batch size of IIMA is better. PGPX is only 3 yrs old and in 2-3 yrs the PGPX rankings and popularity will shoot up.
still what do you say- specially regarding the placement process in ISB vs IIMA PGPX.
for a doctor – which is better???

    thanks a lot
    4.
