MBA after MBBS

Since joining ISB I have received a lot of queries from other doctors and healthcare professionals about healthcare management, the opportunities for doctors after an MBA and getting into a b-school like ISB. The following is an attempt to write about all that I know on each of the above points. I’ll keep adding stuff here in bits and pieces so its not going to be really organised. Leave me a comment if you want more info and I’ll try and write about it.

Disclaimer: This info is not officially from ISB and is what I understand of the admission procedure here. If after reading this, you don’t get in, don’t blame me!!

Q. What are the opportunities available to doctors after an MBA?
A. After an MBA a doctor could get into one of the following industries:

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Biotech companies
  • Healthcare consulting
  • NGOs

The functional areas where you could get in are (by industry):

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations – This is where I’ve got a job now with Apollo Hyderabad
    • Business development
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech companies
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations
    • Business development
    • Licensing
    • Discovery project management and evaluation
    • Medico-marketing

Q. How should I prepare to get into a B-school?
A. I’ll concentrate on how to apply for ISB. These points would generally apply to most US & European B-schools. IIMs is a different ball-game and I suggest talking to a current student or alum from an IIM. Send an email to one of the IIM’s alumni association. I had a pleasant experience there and got a lot of responses.

ISB will look at the following parts of your application to decide whether you fit in or not:

  • Essays
  • Work Experience
  • Recommendations
  • GMAT
  • Interview

Your application will most probably be compared with people from similar backgrounds, for e.g. techies will be compared with other techies and doctors with other doctors.

At the outset let me clarify that GMAT is not the only criteria for admission. Each of the above points will be weighted more or less equally, so concentrate on all of them!

Essays
ISB will ask you to write 4-5 essays as part of your application. The topics vary from year to year so take a look at the application and write. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes and above all be honest. An interviewer can usually find out if you are dishonest! I guess it might be OK to discuss the essay with family and friends, but its definitely not OK to get a professional to write it for you. ISB will definitely find out if its written by a pro.

Work Experience
Here you tell ISB about what you’ve done in your career till now. On the basis of this ISB assesses what skills you possess or have acquired. Tell them all that you have done, don’t be shy, but don’t write anything you have not actually done!

Recommendations
ISB requires you to send 2 recos with your application. According to me the best recos would be from your supervisors/bosses at work. It’s a pretty comprehensive document. Make sure the person who writes the reco knows you well. Don’t try and fudge the reco or fill it up for the recommender! Ask the recommender to fill it up, sign it and give it to you in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal.

GMAT
Last, but not the least, the GMAT. ISB’s average GMAT score has been rising and our batch (2007 batch) has an average of 706! If you get anything below 650, then you might wanna retake the exam, unless you have something exceptional in your profile, essay or work experience.

While I was preparing for my MBA admission, I was also taking coaching for CAT. This helped me a lot with the Maths. Then, I took a short course at Kaplan for the GMAT, did some questions and full-length tests, and went and gave the exam. Got decent marks and that was the end of it.

You should also read this excellent article – 10 secrets for getting into a top B-school
I agree with all the points in this article, except point 4. I agree with the part about not rushing your application but not with the part about round 1. I think you should apply for round 1 only, but ensure you start your preparation and application process well in time so that you do not rush the application. This will especially be true for MBBS grads since they might take more time preparing for the maths parts of the exams.

Q. Does ISB consider my MBBS internship as work experience?
A. Yes! (IIMs don’t) Not anymore.

Q. Does ISB consider my 3 years of MD/MS as work experience?
A. Gray area-ISB did not consider it till now, but that seems to be changing. Call or write to the admissions office for clarifications.

  3. Hi Rahul,
Thanks for all the posts and valuable information. I am graduate in Homeopathic medicine having put in 20+ years in service and planning to pursue MBA. I have couple of questions regarding ISB and MBA as a career given my 40+ age, what do you think of – a) career prospects, b) eligibility from ISB standpoint. On a separate note – I would like to know your views on MBA in clinical research offered by CAHS in association with TMV University Pune (http://www.pexa.org/)

    Thanks so much!

    hi rahul,
i m a final year mbbs student from cmc, ldh. i always wanted to do an mba but was forced by folks to do mbbs. my scores till now are 55% in all 3 profs and 90% in 10th and 84% in 12th. does it really send out a wrong signal for admission to isb or iim’s to have a low mbbs score considering that i never wanted to do it in the first place.. or does it not work out like this and i shud never be honest about telling them that mbbs was a mistake acc to me. i cleared ntse.. does that help?
should i start studying for cat or gmat in internship itself and then give them in the same year cos i dont want to work anywhere as a doctor?
P.S. i have to pass final prof first.
    thanks a lot
    Rishabh

  9. hi Dr, you are doin a great work, for sure.please advice
1.could you tell me,in what post were you working as an intern?
2.how did you join that post?
3.how long were you an intern?
4.is there a better placement prospect initially if i do my mba from some us/uk bschool?or do the companies prefer ppl trained in india?
5.i have made up my mind reg mba,but not sure if i want to work in ops/finance/marketing/….is it a common case scenario?(i am slightly obsessive bout getting all the work assigned to me done)what would you rather me take up?
6.will there be incentives for getting things done?(i am working in public sector now)
7.I SHOULDNT ASK YOU THIS,but please dont get offended.is the pay you are getting now enough to support a ONE MAN EARNING family in a town like where you work now(i am a small town guy hailing from kerala, single)
8.i have not made up my mind regarding hospital chains/pharma/clinical research companies..would you rather me do a post graduate diploma in clinical research course(cost4.5L,dur-1yr,internship-6 months),for better experience and placement?or will a clinical research officer post for one year or two do just fine?
9.would you mind if i call you at some time of your conveniance?
sir, i know you might be busy.if you can ,please reply.a ‘Y/N’ will be far enough for me
    thanking you
    dr.dileep

  10. hi dr.rahul
    thanks for this all information.
my internship will completed by march-08.after that what kaind of work experience is good for me which will help me to get addmission in isb?

Kamesh: We had people in our batch who were 30+. They got decent placements. With your experience, you should have some good options available in the healthcare space as well as other sectors. This is the first time I’ve heard of this MBA. I visited the site but could not get much info there.

Geetanjali: IIMs and a few other b-schools will not count internship as work experience. ISB did count MBBS internship as work experience during my time, but I don’t know about BPT. I think coaching is necessary. You should go meet some good coaching institute like CL, etc. They will let you know how to prepare, what books to read and all. Hospitals employ both MBA and MHA students. Yes, your job as physiotherapist should get counted as work experience. An MHA would start off as an executive/manager in a hospital and go on to be an administrator/CEO for a hospital. The job of an administrator is to ensure that everything in the hospital runs smoothly.

Harish: I never thought about that! As far as I remember ISB has never asked for that score separately. I think that they would not give much importance to the AWA score, since they ask you to write some essays themselves. They can judge your writing skills from those essays much better than the AWA score.

Dr. Richa: Without work experience you can only go in for CAT, not GMAT. I did not understand what you mean by “good field for dentists”.

Rishabh: This is tricky. I think you need to be honest in your interviews. You will have to figure out how best to put this across to the interviewer so that it does not sound negative. What was your ranking in your class in all the 3 profs? As far as ISB goes, you need to get some work experience. If ISB is not your goal then you can give CAT straight out of MBBS.

Dileep: 1, 2 & 3. I don’t understand what you mean by post. My MBBS internship was the regular internship that all MBBS grads do and it was 1 year long.
    4. Placement prospects will depend on how good the b-school is and how well you do there. US/UK also have some really bad schools.
    5. That you have to figure out for yourself. Most b-schools will have core courses for the first part of the course and you can decide later which field you want to take up.
    6. It all depends on the company you join and their pay structures. But most companies include a variable component in the pay structure.
    7. Yes, I think so.
    8. I really can’t comment on this, since I don’t have much idea about clinical research courses.
    9. I would prefer answering questions here.

Dr. Ruchir: Any work experience, even working as a resident doctor is good enough for ISB. The key is to be able to demonstrate to ISB that you have the skills to be a leader in whatever job you do.

  12. hello sir,hw are u? ur blog is wat i was searchin for in the last few days.. i am a final year mbbs student in gmc jmu.day by day m gettin disillusioned with this medicine field partly bcoz of the fact that i dont hav any aptitude for clinical medicine and partly coz of the no. of years one has to put in for a decent degree n practice..so an mba or mha is wat i hav in my mind rt nw..i used to be gud at maths in schooldays but nw a bit of polishing wud be required..! also i am very fond of reading, writing and travelling and yes managing things..i just want ur frank opinion abt how to proceed from here coz i feel u”ll be able to understand me better..waitin for ur advice..thanx a lot..tk cr..

  13. thanku very much. and in ur opinion doing mba from isb is good? and for gmat how long preparation is enough?
and mba in hospital management or other? and what u have done? and what is the duration of ur course.

  14. thank you dr
a)in posts 1,2,3,i referred to your workex after mbbs, which was mentioned in one of the above posts as an internship with a company,if i am not mistaken
b)after 2yrs of contemplation,i’ve made my mind that i am going for medical post graduation, however poor the financial prospects may be
c)your posts have been very helpful in reaching my decision
d)I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GOING THROUGH ALL THESE TROUBLES JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HELPING YOUR PEERS..which is definitly rare nowadays
e)dont get me wrong..with this much amount of compassion for those in trouble, its a great loss to the patients that you left the field(i am extrapolating)
f)thank you for your time again

Neha: As I’ve mentioned above, you need to get some work experience before joining some MBA (especially if your goal is ISB). So get a decent job and after a couple of years prepare for GMAT/CAT…

Dr. Ruchir: I guess the industry and media coverage of ISB goes to show that doing an MBA from there is good 😉 Preparation for GMAT depends on how long it’ll take for you to get your maths and english up-to-date. If you’ve been out of touch I think you’ll need about 6 months. A general MBA should be good. I have an MBA in marketing and my course was 1 year long.

    Dileep:
(a)1. I worked as a intern in market research and marketing.
    2. I applied and was accepted 🙂
    3. 6 months and 4 months, respectively
    (b) Its a good decision and i’m sure if you stick to it, the financial prospects will also be good, but in the long run.
    (c, d, e, f) Thanks!

  16. hello Dr. Rahul
my class rank was 42, 38, 35 in the three profs in a batch of 50… umm surely not good!! but i got all india rank 2 to get into cmc ludhiana with just two seats for all india general candidates. i m sure that would help in some way as far as creating an impression goes. what do u think?
thanks a lot for your guidance

Rishabh: That should definitely help. You might want to ensure that your resume also talks about stuff and achievements other than academics so that the interview also does not focus on acads.

Dr. Abid: You need to get your hands on some GMAT prep book from Princeton or Kaplan and the Official GMAT Guide. For the ISB application procedure please visit ISB’s site which will guide you.

Dr. Ruchir: For ISB you should work for atleast a couple of years more after the internship. You can give the CAT/XAT in the meanwhile and apply to other b-schools like IIM, XLRI, Symbiosis, etc. See my post to Dr. Abid above for the books.

Jessy: Books I’ve mentioned above, you can also join a coaching institute like Princeton or Kaplan. I think CL, etc. also give courses for GMAT.

Sameera: I would not advise an MBA by correspondence. Further, the field you choose depends totally on your choice and interest. All of them pay well, though currently finance guys are making quite a bit of money.

Dr. Sourav: I’ve heard good things about the TISS MHA.

Sivakkumar: I have been unable to find out more details about that course and so can’t comment on it.

Vikram: 1. If they give you a job in a healthcare related field then your work ex will count.
    2. Yeah you could. There are PE funds and I-banks that take docs with an MBA in finance.
    3. Some MBAs from lesser known b-schools might end up as MRs. Yes, marketing would involve field work.
    4. Maths and stats can be an issue.
    5. Sorry, I don’t.

Sandeep: ISB should count private practice as work experience. Write them a mail and they will confirm. But you will have to show some achievements and back that up with recommendations from some patients. Can’t say about other b-schools.

Balkrishna: Great to know that so many docs are there! Thanks for telling others about this.

  30. sir,m a student of 2nd mbbs!n i wanna join management……………..just wanted to know d syllabus 4 dat……n wen shud i start preparin 4 it.sir plz tell will it be a bargain of ny sort if i stop thinkin bout P.G xam and concerntrate on isb??

  31. Hi Rahul! Its a great job that u r doing! Thanks! I am an MBBS passed out in 2002 did my internship until 2003 and then accidentally got into clinical research. This field has helped me move from a typical hospital setup to a corporate environment and then slowly into the management role. Now with 5 years of experience right from working in hospital setups to setting up clinical research divisions for companies, actual hands on experience with doctors to the role of heading clinical operations, I find myself more inclined towards the management side (somehow my maths phobia has reduced though not disappared) I now have a baby and my hubby is well settled, am planning to start a small clinical research teaching institute (either myself or as a franchisee for a renowned group) so that I am not bound 8 hrs at workplace and can devote time and attention to my kid. Also for this venture I would actually be spending just 1 working day (8hrs) out of home and its just 2 hrs job for the rest of the week which I can manage from home. Now when I am doing this, I want to make the maximum of my time. I cannot leave my kid to a maid /creche for 8-9 hours (which would be the case if I am doing a corporate job) but am happy leaving her in a creche for 3-4 hours (for socialising etc) Also I am OK with a maid to take care of her but under my supervision. This means that I can take some time out for studying (will try to manage the classes when baby is at creche) at home. Just wanted to ask you the following:
1.What is the approx time required for the prep given that I am an average student (with some phobia of maths although I scored 87% in maths during my HSC) so that I keep realistic goals?
2.Am I trying to chew more than I can bite (wanting the best of both the world’s: professional and personal)
3.How much would my experience help?
4.Is it possible to complete the course at ISB if my baby (now 6m) stays with me (will be around 1.5. to 2.5 yrs old by the time I am admitted if I get through) Any such examples in the campus?
    5. Which classes would you recommend from Pune?
    6. I am currently drawing a package of 16 L pa. Would doing a course at ISB help me financially later? (although that is the last reason on my list) I want to do it to really broaden my horizon and think like leaders do and get into a leadership n innovation mode. Also will my current position (decent one) help my candidature?

    Dear Rahul,
Smashing work this blog! I finished my MBBS in 2001 and worked in the UK for 5 yearsfinishing my MRCS and getting some element of higher training in Orthopaedics. However with changing scenario in the UK moved back to India and Have got into MS ortho for 2009.
Is it worth pursuing this career or are the prospects better following an MBA now from ISB?(i have a wife and an infant son)
Does one have to stick to healthcare or pharma jobs or have people broken the mould and got into non healthcare jobs?
Looking forward to your reply and thanks
    Aditya

    May 26, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Isha: Its way too soon to start preparing for MBA! ISB will not take you without work experience so you should only start preparing for ISB after having worked for a few years.

Jyoti: 1. 6 months is the outside limit I think you would need to prepare for GMAT. Maths is not such a big issue. You should aim for a 700+ score.

    2. With your current scenario its not too big a deal getting both the things in life. But think about once you get into ISB and then onto a corporate job. You’re not going to have the luxury of time then.

    3. Your experience is going to be a great asset for you.

    4. Yes. Loads of women come to campus with their children and family.

    5. Please find out if there is a Kaplan or Princeton in Pune and join that. Even CL, IMS, etc. provide courses for GMAT.

    6. Getting a package higher than that straight out of ISB might be slightly difficult, but I’m pretty sure that the growth prospects will be bright.

nowshad: I’m not too sure about the IIMs but I think these scores do make you eligible to sit for the CAT. You can check on their website or in the CAT prospectus. There are lots of decent b-schools in India. Go to an institute like CL, IMS, etc. and they will give you a lot of advice on the b-school scene.

dramit: I hope you have read my post clearly. It lists some of the jobs that a medical professional can get after an MBA.

naveen: Try to search for a Kaplan or Princeton in Chennai. Otherwise try CL, IMS, etc.

Dr. Jasmine: Medvarsity (an arm of Apollo) offers some courses like the ones you are looking for. Try searching for those on the net.

Payal: If your aim is to be a hospital administrator then MBA is not going to be of any use. If you want to switch streams then you can consider an MBA. The best prospect for you would be in hospital administration.

Aditya: If you are looking at financial prospects then I don’t think there is much of a difference between MS Ortho and MBA. If you like doing what you are doing, stick to it. Coming to ISB with family is not a problem. 1/4th of the batch is usually married and lives on campus with their families. There are lots of docs from ISB who have switched industries and gotten into non-healthcare jobs.

Alok: I’m not the best person to tell you about job prospects with your qualifications, but I would guess you might have a good chance in law, esp. medical malpractice and the like.

Swati: Most of the good b-schools in India have average fees. Plus, most banks will give you a loan for your education, which you can easily repay once you get a job.

Ashish: I’m sure the placements after this course should be great! You should take a look at the list of possible job prospects in my post above.

Shashank: Sorry missed replying to your post. Academics is an important part of the interview and the whole application process. I don’t think its a good idea to ignore your current acads and prepare for MBA. Rather than a decent percentage I suggest you should aim to be in the top 25% of your class. Thanks 🙂
