MBA after MBBS

Since joining ISB I have received a lot of queries from other doctors and healthcare professionals about healthcare management, the opportunities for doctors after an MBA and getting into a b-school like ISB. The following is an attempt to write about all that I know on each of the above points. I’ll keep adding stuff here in bits and pieces so its not going to be really organised. Leave me a comment if you want more info and I’ll try and write about it.

Disclaimer: This info is not officially from ISB and is what I understand of the admission procedure here. If after reading this, you don’t get in, don’t blame me!!

Q. What are the opportunities available to doctors after an MBA?
A. After an MBA a doctor could get into one of the following industries:

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Biotech companies
  • Healthcare consulting
  • NGOs

The functional areas where you could get in are (by industry):

  • Healthcare services delivery (hospitals, hospital chains)
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations – This is where I’ve got a job now with Apollo Hyderabad
    • Business development
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech companies
    • Marketing and customer relations
    • Sales
    • Operations
    • Business development
    • Licensing
    • Discovery project management and evaluation
    • Medico-marketing

Q. How should I prepare to get into a B-school?
A. I’ll concentrate on how to apply for ISB. These points would generally apply to most US & European B-schools. IIMs is a different ball-game and I suggest talking to a current student or alum from an IIM. Send an email to one of the IIM’s alumni association. I had a pleasant experience there and got a lot of responses.

ISB will look at the following parts of your application to decide whether you fit in or not:

  • Essays
  • Work Experience
  • Recommendations
  • GMAT
  • Interview

Your application will most probably be compared with people from similar backgrounds, for e.g. techies will be compared with other techies and doctors with other doctors.

At the outset let me clarify that GMAT is not the only criteria for admission. Each of the above points will be weighted more or less equally, so concentrate on all of them!

Essays
ISB will ask you to write 4-5 essays as part of your application. The topics vary from year to year so take a look at the application and write. Ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes and above all be honest. An interviewer can usually find out if you are dishonest! I guess it might be OK to discuss the essay with family and friends, but its definitely not OK to get a professional to write it for you. ISB will definitely find out if its written by a pro.

Work Experience
Here you tell ISB about what you’ve done in your career till now. On the basis of this ISB assesses what skills you possess or have acquired. Tell them all that you have done, don’t be shy, but don’t write anything you have not actually done!

Recommendations
ISB requires you to send 2 recos with your application. According to me the best recos would be from your supervisors/bosses at work. It’s a pretty comprehensive document. Make sure the person who writes the reco knows you well. Don’t try and fudge the reco or fill it up for the recommender! Ask the recommender to fill it up, sign it and give it to you in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal.

GMAT
Last, but not the least, the GMAT. ISB’s average GMAT score has been rising and our batch (2007 batch) has an average of 706! If you get anything below 650, then you might wanna retake the exam, unless you have something exceptional in your profile, essay or work experience.

While I was preparing for my MBA admission, I was also taking coaching for CAT. This helped me a lot with the Maths. Then, I took a short course at Kaplan for the GMAT, did some questions and full-length tests, and went and gave the exam. Got decent marks and that was the end of it.

You should also read this excellent article – 10 secrets for getting into a top B-school
I agree with all the points in this article, except point 4. I agree with the part about not rushing your application but not with the part about round 1. I think you should apply for round 1 only, but ensure you start your preparation and application process well in time so that you do not rush the application. This will especially be true for MBBS grads since they might take more time preparing for the maths parts of the exams.

Q. Does ISB consider my MBBS internship as work experience?
A. Yes! (IIMs don’t) Not anymore.

Q. Does ISB consider my 3 years of MD/MS as work experience?
A. Gray area-ISB did not consider it till now, but that seems to be changing. Call or write to the admissions office for clarifications.

Akshay: Both degrees are good. You need to decide where you wanna be in the future? Running a hospital or managing a healthcare business – there’s a big difference between the two. Personally I feel that an MBA gives you a broader perspective on business. You might initially need to struggle to understand the nitty-gritty of running a hospital but it should serve you better in the long-run. However, I suggest you sit with an MHA and figure out what they do and what the future prospects are before deciding on an MBA or MHA. Also, once you do an MHA you are pretty much stuck with hospitals as a career. See my reply to Meenaxi below for the salary question.

Vaibhav: If you don’t want to continue in the health sector it will be better to switch now. Might be a huge struggle but should work out better in the long run. But yes, both hospital jobs and research experience will be counted as work experience.

Meenaxi: I don’t know what a MBA in hospital management gets, but an MBA working in a hospital can earn anywhere from 3-4 lakhs to 20+ lakhs. It all depends on your skills, previous work experience, your school and the company/hospital you join.

Shashank: You won’t face any problems if you give the entrance exams, that only depends on your preparation. But as I have repeated in this post and my comments, it is always better to have atleast a couple years of work experience before doing an MBA.

Vinay: Please read the post – I have given lots of opportunities and the future of the field there already.

Vivek: Sorry missed out replying to you in the last post. I have not heard of any MBA in clinical research yet. However, there are courses in clinical research that you may want to pursue. I have given a list of the career prospects in the post… if you need any info about a specific prospect let me know.

  3. Hi Rahul really a great blog I am very lucky to find your blog very informative and Rahul hatsoff to your dedicated replies and by the way have a few FAqs of my own, help very much needed.
I completed medicine in Dec 2006 had prepared for my pg exams this year but not very effficiently and wanted to opt for RadioDiagnosis which is indeed out of my reach as the cost too high(1Cr) then came around the idea of MBA second time already had the idea just after completing mbbs.(should have gone with my first instinct)

I always had the managerial instinct and presently am managing our 30 year old nursing home along with my parents who are also doctors.

Planning to do mba from a prestigious institute

    Sagar,

How long it will take depends on you. You will need to prepare for CAT or GMAT, prepare your application and for the interview. Depending on how confident you feel it can be anywhere from 1 month to 1 year 🙂

The choice of institutes is upto you but if you want to come to ISB you will need a minimum of 2 years of experience.

  5. please tell me which one is better to do hospital management course
    1- iihmr,jaipur
2- symboisis institute of health sciences

  12. hi rahul,–My profile
    MBBS-2001
    Internship-2002
Jr Residency -15months at a sup. speciality hosp
    Also got Married
Medical Officer at a PSU hospital- 1 year

Then I resigned & joined DNB- After one year of DNB realised that the meagre stipened was not sufficient enough to support the family(newborn had arrived )

Left the Course in between &joined a govt job.
(Didn,t get any experience certificate from the DNB insti)

Now ,its been a year in the govt job.

With this type of profile I would like to ask you wether it will be feasable for me to go for MBA at ISB(I can not afford to be jobles for more than a year),as I do not have the experience cert for the 1yr residency for DNB which I left in between & also my current employer won’t issue a NOC ..even resignation (getting a govt job is difficult, but resignation procedures are even tough &agonisingly slow)
    Help me
    Happy new year

  13. Also I wud like to know how effective is the correspondence course of IMS

    January 3, 2008 at 9:56 PM

Prasanth: The only thing you can do about maths is prepare, prepare, prepare. Pick up some GMAT maths books and practice all the questions. If you are also preparing for CAT then there should be no problem in doing the GMAT maths.

Aruna: Next time please post only one comment!! If you read through the post above you’ll find some tips on preparing for MBA and also look at my suggestion that you should have some experience before doing an MBA.

    Kushal: Thanks!!

Akash: The 1 year thing will be a problem… you should have some proof that you worked there. Not getting an NOC should not be a problem, I think. However, it will be best that you approach ISB with your problems and the Admissions department should be able to help you with the whole thing. I’m not too sure about the IMS correspondence course. However, I personally think you need a lot of motivation to do such courses. Taking classes usually keeps you regular.

    Happy New Year everybody!

  30. hi, i am an anaesthetist, doing srship,i did my graduation and pg from mamc delhi, want to know that part time or correspondance mba are valuaple to get job in pharma company rpl asap

  31. Everybody, sorry for the delay in replying… been a very hectic month at work and on the personal front…

Manish: There are dozens of exams you can give… I suggest you join some decent coaching institute like CL/IMS, etc. and they will give you the download on all the possible options. Apart from the Indian exams, you can also give GMAT for international b-schools and ISB.

Your first step needs to be getting into a good b-school, worry about getting a job later.

Mayank: The above applies to you too. GMAT/CAT is an important first step to get in to a b-school in India or abroad. Then depending on different school’s procedures there will be more steps. Sessions vary for different schools. For ISB the next session will be March 2009 for which application deadlines will be in October and December this year.

Sonal: First, I think you need to make up your mind whether you wanna do an MBA or PG. I don’t think there is any use of joining PG only for the work-experience. Extra-curricular activities are very important for b-schools. You should continue with these. Getting the necessary job experience should not be a problem at all. There are tons of insurance companies looking for MBBS grads to work as underwriters. You should post your resume on some online job site and look for suitable jobs. You can also try applying to pharma companies directly. If nothing else, working as a resident in a hospital is always an option for you and good work experience also.

    Dr. Balkrishna:
    1. I’m not sure whether there are any specialised pharma MBAs, never heard of them neither did I look for them when I started my MBA plan. Even if you want to work in a pharma company only getting a broader perspective on management is always a better idea. You can then build on those principles as you work.

    2. Pharma is a part of healthcare and I don’t see how it is not a logical extension to your MBBS degree. You understand the basic need for drugs and their power in curing diseases. At the end of the day you need to interact closely with doctors to develop, produce and market the drugs. So being a doctor yourself you are in a good position to understand those needs. You can build on this argument but please do research other points as well.

    3. Please be honest in your interview.

    4. You can go and market drugs to doctors, you can help the company decide what is the market potential for the drug pipeline and what will the best marketing plan for the same, etc.

    5. You can specialise in operations, but remember that most operations courses in b-schools are manufacturing oriented, not service oriented.

Shobhit: Please read the post above… that is a decent guide to MBA after MBBS. If you have any specific query I will be glad to answer. I’m not sure about the maths part. You will need to check with the specific b-schools that you apply to. CAT/GMAT maths is only till 10th level and I don’t think you would have a problem with it.. but not sure about the academic requirements of the b-schools.

Vishal: I don’t think anyone is going to ask for a b-plan at this stage. You are planning to do an MBA so that you can make a good b-plan from your idea!! They might definitely ask you why you would be suitable to run such a plan – that is something you should have an answer for.

Dr. Raman: If you are really interested in hospital management then you need to look in to doing Masters in Hospital Management or Masters in Hospital Administration. I’m not sure how to prepare for those courses as I never looked in to the same. Please visit some university websites that offer this course and you should be able to find the requirements.

Devesh: Your CV only speaks about your PERSONAL achievements. While this is good, any good b-school or even company will want to know what you achieved in your work experience and how good a team player are you. Please cut down on your awards, achievements and stuff and write about your work experience too.

Dr. Nitin: Part-time or correspondence MBA can be decent too. I would personally suggest part time rather than correspondence since the biggest benefit of an MBA is interacting and learning from your peers.

  32. i have done diploma anaesthesia with one year of teaching srship at mamc, have presented paper in many cme, was the president of college, and also secratory association of resident doctors, and medical education commite delhi medical association, and in, have organised many cultural events at national level, but i had only 51 percent in mbbs, do i have any chance of applyng for isb.i shall be greatly thankfull to u for ur advice.

  33. Thanks Rahul, for reply.

  34. To DR Deb

1.how much time did u take to prepare for the course

Approximately for 20-25 days, I did devote full time. It makes good sense to spend at least 4 months full time and 6-8 month weekend coching. One needs to spend more time if he is weak in maths. I was studying earlier, but internship left me with little time.
I took coaching from Byju class. He is available in mumbai, banglore, delhi, chennai on diff weekdays.

Dr. Nitin: You can definitely create an application that can stand a chance at ISB.

    Dr. Balkrishna: Best of luck!

Devesh: I think you should work for a few years before applying. Looking at the profile of the doctors who came this year, even for doctors it is becoming pretty competitive. So some more work experience will greatly improve your chances.

  38. Hi Dr. Rahul,

My C.V above+ your reply to it as quoted

" Your CV only speaks about your PERSONAL achievements. While this is good, any good b-school or even company will want to know what you achieved in your work experience and how good a team player are you. Please cut down on your awards, achievements and stuff and write about your work experience too."

Dr. Rahul i could not brief you about my work experince in my Cv as currently i'm an intern. My internship will be gettinh over in November 08. its just that ive jot a job alongside. right now i'm in Marlabs, bangalore with a package of 4.5 lacs pa. . By the end of my internship i'l be having some 1 year of work experience in my company as well. Plz dont be surprized at how i'm able to manage both the things simultaneously, but by god's grace it going on smoothly.

As you mentioned previously that ISB's new batch will be starting in March 09 and the application deadline will be october-december08. i just want to know if it will be in my favour to apply for the 09 batch with my already displayed personal achiements + combined 1 year of internship + job experience or shoule i work for another 1-2 years after finishing my internship in november 08 and then go ahead with the application process.

Please do reply back. my mind is in a big chaos and unless i get some expert advice on it I doubt my head will blast thinking over it. thanks

  44. hello guys

  45. hello guys to all,
first of all let me tell u the truth behind the glory of software professionals and mba graduates,

1….plus points for mba ; good money, money and money, and no night shifts,
minus points; u r no more a doctor, u know we r bulid with such high level of individuality since the day we join mbbs ,people treat us as gods….
so from gods to suddenly selling products. manging hospitals,,,and joining as adviser in ngo’s needs lotta courage……….
2……plus points for mbbs: u r a doctor for ever..and u r the one…..and u treat the patients with ur own hand. and lotta satisfaction in mind…no need to degrade ur self from doctor to actor ( yes i call everything acting in corporate world, the way they dress they talk….all meant to enhance bussiness basically………

minus points after mbbs; low levels of income for some horrible time called pg,…but after pg its the dream come true……….

so i too will tell u some options after mbbs as my friend rahul always guides….

1…….mba : marketing ,,,,all pharma industries needs pharma guys,,,,,,,,,,….but we need to roam around the country like medical reps and dogs ….mmmm lotta worj through out the day…….u get phone calls at home.. even after long hrs of work at office…..so life is no relax game…
2…to do mba we need to do from institutes like iims, xat, mat, isb, spjain, symbiosis, wellingkar, tiss,…and so on,
3…….mba hospital administration/ master in hospital adminstration ………this ones better option for a cool life, leading the life of managers and so on.
4institutes offering hospital adminstration,,,,,,apollo institute of health sciences.,hinduja group, tiss, devi ahalya, kerala univeristy, madura kamaraj university,
4………insurance or tpa side,,,,,,,,,,u need mbbs plus a certificate regarding insurance…..given by osmania univerty,
good average life,,,,,,,,,pay packages around 30000,,,,but u need to have a lotta experince towards insurance claims before u get a job,,,,,then who wil take the freshers….every one needs experince,.hhelll then who wil give a job to greshers,
5……..medical writing….or medical content developers…..u need not have experince after mbbs……but pay atmost stops around 30000 for longer years, no growth,,,,
6…….do fellowships and diplomas in emergency medicine and family medicine,,,,,,,,,,,conducting by,,,,,medvarsity, apollo, cmc,,,wockhadt, institute of emergency medical services kerala,
    7……go for usmle…….which is a very tough path,,,,chances of getting a good score,,,,,,low
    chances of getting residency…….low.
chances of getting visa……………low……so not a good option….
8……..write dnb……….very attractive option,,,,,,,,and most of them should not quit writing this, as this always seems an better and easy way to getting settled in pg.
9…medical pg ,,,,,,,,very good writing this…..my opinion is to join immediately in any medical clinical degree,,,,,,,very descent life, respect in society, good satisfaction in life,,,,
10….join some diploma or medical pg in managemetn kota,,,,,,,spending 10 lakh ………..if u dont have money take loan from bank for diploma,,,this is better than spending 15 lakh at isb……still staying on medical side,,,,,,u know some colleges offer diplomas for 10 lakhs,,,,not md but diplomas,,,,,,,,exampls,,,,,,,,,srmc….vianayka missions..all karanataka private colleges,,,, etc,,,,,,,even with diplomas u get a decent 40 to 50 thousand rupees per month,..
11…….do msc computers after mbbs through annamalau university which doesnt require maths at undergraduate level to join computers at pg level….i mean join msc computer science,,,,,
with the computer pg degree…..u can join mtech computer science later,,,,,,,or u can even write gate to join iits…u know better way to shift to software side ………..and u may even get chances for usa,…
12…..establish a small clinic with mbbs,,,,,dont get shocked,,,my friends r earning a decent one lakh rupees in their own towns,,,,,,its true try it out u will know…..
13……before all that,,,,,,,,we doctors should have a good network, and team mgmt capabilities with unity to solve against all our problems,,,
14….take a loan and do a md in china or russia,,,,within 10 lakhs,,,,,,,
15………go to maldives,,,,,, they r paying a decent 50000 per month just for mbbs,,,,,earn and study there for pg with friends….always go with friends…
16…..last but not the least,,,,,,join a govt sector,,,,,u wil earn around 15 to 20000 ,,and establish a small clinic in ur own town u wil get nice bucks,,,,,dont get afraid with md s…..clinic really runs,,,,,,before that u gain experience in emergency medicine and managing cases,,,,,,thats mandatory……..with that we can even eliminate and prevent rmps pmps,,and direct prescription of drugs by medical stores,,,,,
17………friends why not we fight against medical stores and stage a dharna and strike all over country level……becoz they act like doctors all the time prescribing their own medicine with their own diagnosis.think abt it,,,,becoz if we stop that ,,,the demand for docs increases profusely…
i forgot to tell abt my qualification,,,,,,,,me dr tomcruise……..mbbs+mha+msc.computer science,+mba distance mode……now working in who……but my plan is to shift to cilinical side in future …….

one thing is true friends dont underestimate mbbs r medical side, its a previlage we got a chance to become doctors,,,,,and serve people…….dont feel ur self inferior to mba and softwware professionals,,.,,,its not all the money that matters,,,,,,,,,,we need lotta satisfaction at the end of the day for what ever u do………dont get frustated when u get troubles,,,,,,,,just go to a movie r enjoy and then….just give a tough fight again…u wil get success at the end,,,,,,examples r my own friends…..and basically i dont encourage any of my juniors to shift to other sides as it looks more un ethical……remember” the other side always looks greener”
so think well before wat u do and b justified for urself before wat u do..its not the money that all matters at the end of the day…….
its so great that rahul khandelwal initiated this site and ideas in thiking different or out of the box……..
every one has their own ideas ofcourse we have to respect them…..

finally thanks to my friend rahul kahdelwal for giving me this chance to write my opinion in ur blog…..i spoke to u on mobile many times, keep guessing pal,,,,,,,,,,,bye hava good day.

  46. u know software professionals r the ones who get spodylyitis, impotence due to long working hrs in computers,,,,,,,,,so b care fullll….u need to marry in life…….hahahaha

  47. this is the best website i have ever seen…….

  48. what is the persentage of doctors applyng , and how many get selected, plus what is the grading system ,like academic performances vs gmat,a good gmat can it overrule poor academics, thanks sir ,reply

  49. Hello…….just completed internship after MBBS…….have joined Max New York Life as agent advisor………this post is for nine months…..after that i will be given the job of Underwriter (those who look into the medical claims of insurance holder) depending on my work………

    1) What is ur opinion on this job prospect?(if u have come across this field)

2)Can you please tell me whether this kind of job (taking granted that i will do it for 2 to 3 years)………..would help me immensely at the start and end of MBA????
